Travis Head shines in BGT 2024-25
30-year-old Travis Head, who was the chief architect of Australia’s thrashing of India in the finals of the ICC Test World Championship and ICC Cricket World Cup, has returned to worry the men in blue.
He started the series with an 11, but since then he has looked unstoppable. He made 89 runs in the second innings of the Perth Test and then followed it up with an impressive knock of 140 runs in the Adelaide Test.
Then in the Gabba Test, Travis Head smashed 152 runs in the first innings and demolished the Indian bowling attack. Currently, he is the leading run-getter in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 with 405 runs in the bag at an average of 81.80.
I think he is very intelligent – Ravi Shastri
Speaking to ICC Review, Ravi Shastri spoke about Head’s performances and stated:
“Because his new last name is Travis Head’ache’. They’re looking for balms in India. For foot problems, ankle problems (and) even headaches they’re looking for a balm. He’s great for that.” .
Head has struggled a lot against short balls over the years, but has recently made huge improvements in how he tackles this type of delivery. Shastri noticed this and praised him for vastly improving his short ball style of play. He said:
“I think he’s very smart. From what I saw of him three years ago, he’s improved a lot. Especially with the way he plays the short ball. He prepared to let it go. Sometimes he’s learned to let- ok”.
“He’s not a big shot all the time with a short underarm delivery or something. He’s ready to ride it or go for the bigs. And if he’s half, half and off, he also hits it in front of the square
“He takes the length very well. This is one of its great strengths. And it has an offside flashing blade. So he is a hard man to contain. And he’s in the shape of his life.”
We all knew he was dangerous but the first shot he played against Jasprit Bumrah… – Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri said the way he played against Travis Head jasprit bumrah shows that he is in the form of his life. So far, Head has made 83 runs off 91 balls against one of the best batsmen of all time, Jasprit Bumrah, who has been a nightmare for other Australian batsmen. He said:
“We all knew he was dangerous, but the first shot he played against Jasprit Bumrah, that cover, on the front foot. It was in many ways a bit on the up, good delivery, decent delivery. He told me that this is a player in prime form.
“He continued to show exactly that. And the thing about him is that there’s no, his mentality is very clear. There’s no clouded mentality. He’s very clear on the situation. That’s my strength.
“I’ll play that way. Yeah, I’ll look at the state of the game. I might switch from fourth to third. But I’ll always be in third and fourth gear once I get my eye.”
