Roya was arrested a day after the crime. According to the indictment brought by federal investigators, seen by the BBC, Roy went to the hospital drunk and found the female doctor sleeping alone.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) – India’s main crime agency investigating the case – had sought the death penalty for Roy.

But on Monday, the judge disagreed, saying he had considered all the evidence and did not consider the case to be a “rare” crime.

The judge also gave Roya an opportunity to address the court before announcing the verdict. He claimed that he was innocent and that he was “falsely involved” in this case.

Roy claimed that there were “others involved in the crime” without naming any names.

The judge rejected Royan’s claims and said that the court had already found him guilty of all charges.

Some politicians and social network users criticized the punishment.
