Player ratings as Reds clinch emphatic win

Tottenham Hotspur were hammered 6-3 by Liverpool in front of their own fans on Sunday afternoon in a gleefully chaotic game.

Arne Slot was full of praise for his Tottenham counterpart Ange Postecoglou before Sunday’s game. “It’s a joy to watch them,” said the Liverpool manager. It looked like a joy to play against Spurs.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delivery for the away opener was a thing of beauty, flicked from deep in the Tottenham half to the head of Luis Diaz to give Liverpool advantage at 23 minutes. Andy Robertson’s cross soon after was not cleared properly, bouncing for Alexis Mac Allister to nod home.

James Maddison took advantage of a great turnover to halve the deficit with a goal against the run of play in the 41st minute. However, Liverpool restored their two-goal lead before the break, with Dominik Szoboszlai finishing off a move that it started

If there was any doubt about the final result, Liverpool sealed the three points with a blistering counter-attack inside the first ten minutes of the second half. Despite Archie Gray’s best efforts, Mohamed Salah he was on hand to score a fourth goal.

Barely five minutes passed before Salah scored at the end of another blistering transition, adding a fifth for Liverpool on the hour mark in a typically entertaining game to make it 5-1.

Tottenham, however, did not rest. The hosts continued to press forward, leaving themselves exposed on the counter but setting the stage for Dejan Kulusevski and then Dominic Solanke to beat Alisson to make it 5-3.

Díaz started this festive goal-fest and he would finish it. Breaking past a defensive set that was purely hypothetical in the 85th minute, Díaz scored into the far corner.

The nine-goal thriller leaves Liverpool four points clear of Chelsea at the summit of the Premier League, while Spurs sit in the bottom half of the table.
