One person died and several others were injured as a result of a fireboat explosion at a Florida marina

Lauderdale Marina, 5 people were injured and 1 person was found dead as a result of the boat explosion.

The incident happened on December 23 around 6 o’clock in the evening. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) received multiple 911 calls regarding the explosion and a burning boat.

Before crews discovered a significant fire on one boat, it quickly spread to another.

FLFR said five people were taken to hospital, three of them suffering from “traumatic injuries”.

FLFR worked with diving teams Broward Sheriff’s Office to find a sixth victim dead in the water.

“It kind of sounded like an explosion and I turned around and the whole dock was already on fire,” the witness said local television station WSVN. “He’s engulfed in flames.”

“I was screaming, screaming and then they told us we had to get out immediately. I was trying to concentrate to see where my family was,” Maria Sans told the media outlet.

Local waiter told the TV station that he had received the order when the explosion occurred.

“All I saw was the ship exploding and the boat going up, the boat coming back and the boat catching fire. I ran there to see if anyone needed help… So it was like chaos,” said Tamer Dimiati.

According to WSVN, the dock where the explosion occurred is a gas station. A similar explosion and fire occurred at the scene same place a week ago.

FLFR notes patient privacy concerns that it does not identify anyone involved. The department said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was the primary investigative agency investigating the cause of the explosion and subsequent fires.

“We will have a better idea once the vessels are removed from the water and can be examined more closely by investigators,” the FFLR said in a statement.
