One of the best trains about trains in Hollywood has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

I am far from the first person who noted that trains are cinematic. There’s a built -in impetus for any story that occurs on the train: a giant vehicle is on the move, scale from one place to another, and unlike the planes as) the train travels close enough to the ground that people can jump or be dumped ( A huge story moment in the recent “blitz” Steve McCuin) and b) there is still just There are enough space for dozens of passengers to get up, walk, interact and even fight when the situation calls for it. (Fortunately, there are a lot of combat movies where the situation really calls for this, for example “Spiderman” Sam Raimi 2. “) Video of essayist Patrick H. Viles A great recent video about it What I recommend checking, but today I want to talk about one specific train movie – one of the best I saw.

The film, which was released in 1952, is called “Narrow”. Here’s a prerequisite: a couple of police are instructed to accompany the gangster’s killed widow on the train so that she could testify against the gang, but the mafia sent the killers to kill her before she could knock down the whole organization. By the way, most of the movie is only 71 minutes to end their lives. Sounds amazing, huh? This is – and I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Rotten tomatoes It does not list much reviews from the era (most of this century, looking back at the film), so its 100% rating is presumably not as impressive as a movie with a 100-plus review. But in the “narrow breakdown” there was one defender of the great name: François Trufa, a film critic, who eventually became one of the key directors of the French new wave. In his essay “from A to Z”, Analyzing the “South Sea Greek” and “narrow stock”, he writes that the latter is accused of a very moral nitroglycerin, but gives a favor that any sweaty driver of a heavy slow car can envy. ” But more contemporary critics are obviously appreciated the movie and actually it ended /List of movies about undervalued NUar movie Just a few years ago.

This is the type of movie that I like to recommend people who are interested in old films but not sure where to start. Of course, it is important to check the classics, but films such as this-universe thrillers without a hint of pursuit of their means are what has supported this industry for over a hundred years. There is something special in a simple B-film with a modest budget executed to perfection, with characters that make reasonable decisions trying to overcome each other and survive in close quarters with a metaphorical clock that counts all the time. (The whole movie was shot in just 13 days.) And without giving nothing, he ended up a little more “narrow” than initially meets the eye, making it even more satisfactory than the simple version of the story would be possible . I know there are hundreds Memorable films focused on the trainMany of them are big and bright, but this unpretentious little thriller is one of the best Hollywood ones, which were produced.

I told a little about the movie in today’s episode The /Film Daily Podcast, which you can listen below:
