Old Glory Studios funded the tactical shooter title with an equity-based crowdfunding
New developer Old Glory Studios today announced the launch of its new crowdfunding campaign, in partnership with Folla Capital, LLC. The studio, which was founded by military veterans who previously worked on titles like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and The Division, plans to develop military-based titles, with its launch game being team-based PvP shooter Victory’s Grave: Outflank. To build this title, Old Glory is launching a “Regulation Crowdfunding” campaign that will give investors an equity stake in the studio.
According to its founders, Old Glory will use the funding to build Victory’s Grave, with a minimum investment of $500 and an ultimate goal of $1,235,000. They are offering SAFE (simple forward equity agreement) interest that will drive the game’s “cutting-edge production, innovative marketing campaigns and key operational expansions,” according to Folla’s campaign page.
Old Glory operates as a trefoil organization, according to its founders. It will include a core team — Old Glory co-founders Lewis Manalo and Matt Pathak — with specialized tasks outsourced to freelancers. Pathak and Manalo, the studio’s creative director and executive producer, respectively, told GamesBeat that the studio now has a completed playable prototype of Victory’s Grave.
Regulation crowdfunding and building a different military shooter
Manalo and Pathak told GamesBeat in an interview that the unique element of Victory’s Grave: Outflank is its tactical element. Pathak said the game’s RTS features add a new level of strategy to the gameplay: “Each round will be a new and unique experience, allowing for maximum replayability. The implementation of the game will exaggerate the realism without losing the sense of authenticity.” The studio also already has plans for a follow-up.
Manalo added that part of the impetus behind the game came from his work on Ghost Recon: Wildlands. “(It) was the first AAA game I wrote about, and when it came out I was shocked to learn that not everyone likes to play narrative campaigns. Some people have only played through the open world and some have only played PvP… Our vision is to create these game modes as separate titles that share a narrative. This reduces our risk as a studio and will save players money while offering them every experience. Victory’s Grave: Outflank is the PvP game.”
Manalo told GamesBeat in an interview that Old Glory felt crowdfunding was the most viable option for the studio’s unusual trefoil structure. “Regulated crowdfunding, unique in the United States, allows us to raise capital directly from investors. Unlike pledge-based crowdfunding, where people essentially buy a product up front, Reg CF investors get an equity stake in the company. It’s become quite common for many companies and there’s no reason why game studios shouldn’t use it too.”
John Panaccione, partner at Folla Capital, said in a statement, “This initiative represents a unique opportunity for investors to support a veteran-led company with a clear roadmap for success in the gaming industry. Supporting Old Glory Studios is more than just a potential financial return; it’s being part of a team that pushes the boundaries of storytelling and game design.”
