NYSE, Nasdaq to close Jan. 9 for national day of mourning following death of Jimmy Carter

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will observe a national day of mourning for the late President Jimmy Carter by closing their markets on January 9.

The NYSE said Monday that the NYSE, NYSE American Equities, NYSE American Options, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Arca Options, NYSE Chicago and NYSE National will be closed on Jan. 9 in honor of the former chairman.

All of Nasdaq US Stock and Options Markets It will close the same for the day, Nasdaq said separately.

JIMMY CARTER, the 39th PRESIDENT of the United States, DIED at the age of 100.

Carter, who served in the White House from 1977 to 1981, died on Sunday. He was 100 years old.

“Jimmy Carter, from humble roots as a farmer and family man, dedicated his life to public service and protecting our freedom. During his remarkable post-presidential life, President Carter left an enduring legacy of philanthropy,” NYSE Group President Lynn Martin said in a statement. “The NYSE will respect President Carter lifetime service to our nation by closing our markets on the National Day of Mourning.”

“We mourn the loss of President Carter and will close our U.S. markets for the National Day of Mourning to celebrate his life and honor his legacy,” said Nasdaq Chairman Tal Cohen. “On behalf of Nasdaq, we extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family.” .

A national day of mourning has been declared for Carter President Bidenwhich at the same time instructed public buildings and the military to half-swallow their flags for 30 days.

“I am designating January 9, 2025, as a day of mourning across the United States,” Biden said Sunday I call on the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn ceremony.”

The NYSE said it was flying its American flag at half-mast “in honor of President Carter throughout the period of mourning.”

Partner Nasdaq said it “observed a moment of silence today at 9:20 a.m. ET in honor of the former president with a message on the Nasdaq Tower.”

JIMMY, THE LEGACY OF ORGANIZATION FOR ROSALYN CARTER WILL CONTINUE.

Carter’s wife, former first lady Rosalyn Carter, died last year.

The former president is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, the Carter Center said Sunday.

“My father was a hero not only to me, but to all who believe in peace, human rights and selfless love,” his son Chip said in a statement on his death. “My brothers and sisters and I shared him with the rest of the world through these shared beliefs. The world is our family because he brought people together, and we thank him for continuing to live by these shared beliefs.”
