Notre Dame Coach Marcus Freeman Family Guide: Wife Joanne and 6 Children
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has a pretty impressive lineup off the field.
Freeman, 38, who became Notre Dame’s head coach in December 2021, married his wife, Joanna Freemanin 2010. The couple met while attending Ohio State University, where Marcus was a star quarterback.
Joanna, a former news reporter at WBNS Channel 10 in Columbus, is now a full-time working mother of the couple’s six children: a son Vinnie17 years old, daughter Sienna12 years old, son Gino11 years old, son Nico9 years old, daughter Capri7 and a son Rock6.
Marcus also has a daughter named after him Bria18 years old, from a previous relationship.

At Marcus’ 2021 induction press conference in South Bend, Joanna and all six children were at the center of the celebration. Since then, Marcus has regularly shared family moments and important events for the Irish faithful on social media.

Marcus Freeman’s wife Joan
Joanna has been there for Marcus through the ups and downs of his playing and coaching career, but she admits it hasn’t been easy.
“We don’t have a super romantic love story,” Joanna told Yahoo Sports in 2021. “We had a lot of breakups and reconciliations. We fell hard. We quickly fell. We were very young when we met, and in many ways we grew up together and became adults.”
On Mother’s Day 2024, Marcus paid tribute to Joanne—and his own mother, Chong—and thanked them for everything they had done for him.
“I am so blessed to have these two amazing women in my life,” Marcus shared via Instagram. “They have influenced our family in many ways with their selflessness and unconditional love.
Marcus Freeman’s son, Vinnie
17-year-old Vinny is actively following in his father’s athletic footsteps.
A junior at Pennsylvania High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, he plays on the school’s football team.
Vinny is also an experienced wrestler, does official visit to Cornell University in August 2024.

“They say to be the best you have to beat the best,” Vinnie said South Bend Tribune in February 2024 “I want to be the best.”
As a sophomore, Vinny finished with a 34-4 record.
Marcus Freeman’s daughter, Sienna
Siena, 12, became a beloved part of the Cincinnati Bearcats football family when Marcus was the school’s defensive coordinator from 2017-2020.

Marcus also passed on his love of football to his son Gene, 11.
“It’s officially football season for Freeman,” Marcus wrote via Instagram in July 2018, showing Gene and brother Vinny wearing football helmets and posing with their father.
In May 2019, Gina enjoyed some alone time with her father when they attended a Cincinnati Reds baseball game together.

9-year-old Niko celebrated his 4th birthday with pizza, siblings and a group of friends, including then-Cincinnati head coach, Luke Fickell — in July 2019.

4-year-old Capri met her smiley siblings in June 2017. “Welcome to this world and our Capri family!!” Marcus wrote via Instagram along with a photo of Capra being held by her brother Vinny and her sister Sienna, while her other brothers, Gina and Nick, are sitting on the couch beaming.
Of course, all the kids were dressed in University of Cincinnati gear.

Shortly after his birth, 6-year-old Rocco celebrated the holidays with his parents and five siblings.
“Merry Christmas from the Freeman Crew!” Marcus wrote via Instagram in December 2018.
