Nosferatu celebrates against the backdrop of Sonic and Mufasa’s box office war
This December turned out to be a pretty big month for movies. In a little while relaxed startthe month really went wild with Sonic 3 and Mufasa, both managed to gain momentum during the Christmas period. And as the year draws to a close, these two films are still fighting for the top spot, even as the newer Nosferatu has entered the fray.
per DiversityRobert Eggers’ gothic horror pic trailed the two children’s films and earned $40.3 million from its Christmas release. That’s almost double the original $25 million projections, and now it is the best open of all time for the focus functions. That’s it by word of mouth it was pretty good, that is trailers have looked a lot well, people like Eggers’ previous work too. It probably also helps that the trailers don’t let you see what Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok it looks that way, but the build-up to how weird he can look is puzzling. at the moment Nosferatu it’s only released domestically and it’s unclear when Universal will release it to international audiences.
Meanwhile, Mufasa and Sonic have grown in the country and abroad. The former earned $111 million in the US, bringing its global total to $328 million. Things are getting better for The Lion King backstory from Christmas and the same goes for the Blue Blur: Sonic’s U.S. earnings jumped to $137.5 million, bringing the worldwide total to $211 million. As an analyst Luis Fernando pointed out that the trio is having a tough time in Japan, but will probably end up turning the films into a billion dollar franchise when all is said and done, then there probably is at least three more films on the way.
Speaking of billions: it’s looking increasingly certain Moana 2 will join the billion dollar club. Fernando it also noted that the film’s box office has grown to $882.5 million worldwide. There’s obviously a long queue, and the same could be true for the final volley of 2024 releases as we head straight into 2025. Starting with the New Year, we have The damned on January 3 and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera on Jan. 10, followed by Universal’s A wolf man on January 17.
