New AI powered Samsung refrigerators will allow direct grocery ordering

Samsung is introducing grocery shopping capabilities to its AI-powered refrigerators.
U.S. customers will be able to stock groceries “directly from the screens” of their Samsung Bespoke refrigerators thanks to an upcoming feature that combines Samsung’s “proprietary food recognition technology” and an application programming interface (API) compatible with Instacart’s products. the company said Thursday.
The feature, which stems from a newly announced “multi-year” partnership between Samsung and the online grocery service, will launch on Samsung’s 2025 order of “different types of displays” and “AI Vision Inside” technology.

It will be available on Samsung’s older AI Family Hub+ refrigerators, provided they have its food recognition technology, this year as well, according to Samsung.

The company said that applicable models will get the feature through an online update, the timing of which is still being worked out.
“The combination of Samsung’s core technologies and Instacart’s outstanding online grocery shopping platform will be a great example of how the partnership can create a new level of convenience,” Samsung Electronics CEO Jeong Seung-moon said in a statement.
Samsung also described the Instacart partnership as the company’s “latest step forward in Samsung’s journey to add value to the user experience by working hand-in-hand with other forward-looking technology leaders.”
Its AI Vision Inside already helps owners track the food In their refrigerator, it relies on cameras and deep learning models to do this, according to the company.

The technology can identify up to more than three dozen food items, while “unrecognized food names and dates must be set manually,” according to Samsung.
The upcoming feature will be expanded to “AI Vision Inside:“Enabling recharge with Instacart, right from the fridge,” it says.
When the feature launches, U.S. Samsung Bespoke refrigerator owners must have a Samsung and Instacart account and Wi-Fi to use it, the company said in a press release.They must also live in an area where Instacart operates.

The 9-inch AI Home Bespoke Refrigerator is expected to be unveiled at CES 2025 alongside a range of high-tech home appliances. Samsung previously described the 9-inch AI Home Bespoke Refrigerator as a device that “ awaits consumers looking for advanced Family Hub features in a more compact size.”
CES 2025 will run from January 7th to January 10th.
