Anime has become more popular than ever before, and while the most famous names are currently embracing the classic shounen tradition, such as Demon Slayer, Jiu-jutsu Kaisenand My Hero Academythat all changes thanks to a retired hitman who is a misfit. Days of Sakamoto is another story about a legendary assassin forced to return to the underworld, but what the anime and manga it’s based on will get the law perceives the absurdity of the situation. Taro Sakamoto is a dangerous man, even after years of retirement, but he won’t break the promise he made to his wife not to kill anyone.

Creator Yuto Suzuki was inspired by action films of the last decade, including Equalizer and John Wick when he wrote a story about Taro Sakamoto, who decided to hang up his gun to date Aoi, a clerk who made it a condition of their relationship that he never kill again. U Days of Sakamoto In the first episode, Taro’s quiet, perfect life as a convenience store owner is disrupted by ghosts from his past, forcing him to take up arms, only to be joined by the store’s employees, who coincidentally include his former assassin protégé, Shin. Shin has an uncanny ability to read minds, specifically Sakamoto’s, which is very useful as the former assassin can’t say much and prefers to keep to himself.

In practice, reading Sheen’s mind is similar to reading Anya’s mind Spy x familywhen she reads Lloyd and Yore’s minds to know what they are thinking but will never say out loud. Sakamoto Daze benefits greatly from Taro’s blank stare, while other, much more expressive characters bounce off him, especially his family, who are strangely accepting of his past life. The way Aoi, Shin, Hana (Aoi and Taro’s six-year-old daughter) and, in the second episode, Lu, a young woman on the run from assassins, play off Taro is a perfect combination of characters, and already, it has turned the series into a hit.

Days of Sakamoto published weekly on Netflixwith new episodes premiering every Saturday. It’s unwatchable at this point, but once you start watching, you’ll want to keep going until it’s over. Millions of viewers agree that the first episode was a resounding success, debuting as the third most popular show on Netflix of the day, an unheard of achievement for the first episode of an original series anime. This makes sense considering the manga has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

My Hero Academy soon to be over Demon Slayer goes to the theater, and Jiu-jutsu Kaisen is gearing up for its final season, which will leave a huge hole in the anime schedule. Days of Sakamoto is an unlikely successor, but the humor, gunplay and well-crafted characters mean it has all the right moments to be a massive hit. It remains to be seen if that momentum will carry over from the first season, but with a second season adapted into an even more action-packed storyline already slated for July, we’ve only just begun to see Sakamoto’s true power.

Days of Sakamoto is now streaming on Netflix with new episodes every Saturday, with a second season coming in July.
