National travel survey – Coming soon: National Household Travel Survey

How are Indians traveling? Where are they traveling? And what goals do they travel? These are some questions that new research will try to find answers.

The National Statistics Office will conduct a tourist study of national households in the coming months by the Ministry of Health (NTS).

“NHTS will get information about everyday journey inside the country. The results will provide a picture of all types of people’s journey and choice. The purpose of traveling research is to understand who travels, as well as when, why and how they travel, “said the official note of the Ministry of Statistics.

The survey will provide an opportunity to assess the matrix of the spatial demand for different transport regimes, including railways, airlines and factors that affect the decision of the regime and the destination. It will also evaluate the elasticity of each travel mode for each travel mode.

In addition, in general, Rail Rail demand matrix, assess the wise requirement of the class of different coaches: to formulate the Indian Railways.

Some of the 80th round of the Sample Research Organization (NSSO) will be a tourist study a year and expected to begin in July this year. Similar surveys are conducted in several other countries, to understand passenger transportation and demand for different transport regimes that help in better planning.

Indian railways moved more than 6.9 billion passengers in 2023-24. Meanwhile, internal air passenger transportation in India amounted to 161.3 million, in 2024.

In addition to NTSO, NSSO will also conduct internal testing of tourism expenses and health survey as part of the 80th round of research, which will be performed in 2025.
