While modern times have brought unique flavors of candy cane to Christmas trees, they weren’t always available in such great variety and weren’t traditionally used to decorate trees.
The exact origins of the candy cane are a bit murky, though there is a general theory that supports the beginning of the popular holiday treat.
Candy canes, in their most basic form, are believed to date back to 1670 as a way to silence young singers during church services in Germany.
Meanwhile, a choir director at a cathedral in Cologne, Germany, gave young singers sugar sticks to keep them quiet during a “Live Cheche” ceremony, reports Always a Treat.

Popular candy cane vendors in the early sugar years included Doscher’s Candies and Bobs Candies.
Doscher’s Candies, founded by Klaus Doscher in Cincinnati, Ohio, created candy canes in 1871 using peppermint oil, preparing the mixture in copper kettles, and rolling and kneading by hand, according to the company’s website.
Bobs Candies was founded around 1920 by Bob McCormack in Georgia, according to the Ferrara Candy Company website, which makes the brand.
According to Georgia Public Broadcasting, McCormack’s brother, Father Gregory Keller, was responsible for inventing the innovative machine used to twist the candy and shape the cane.

Today, candy canes are so popular that there is even a day dedicated to the treat every year on December 26th “National Candy Cane Day”.
As for the “correct” way to use the candy, the verdict is still out.
