Minecraft Education launches a replica of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican

For centuries, the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican has been standing as one of the most inspiring landmarks in the world-home for breathtaking art, architecture and stories that have shaped history.

Now, for the first time, students can enter this legendary building and take on the role of their care Peter is here: AI for cultural heritageA brand new Minecraft training attempt, created in collaboration with Microsoft and Vatican. Part of the manual restoration uses AI.

Peter here invites students to explore St. Peter’s basilica through an interactive gameplay that combines history, artificial intelligence (AI) instruments and creative problem solving. Students will travel in time to reveal the rich history of St. Peter’s Basilica as they take on practical tasks for recovery as part of Sanpietrini, the dedicated team responsible for maintaining St. Peter.

They will meet historical figures, explore key artifacts and use simulated AI tools. Teachers can bring this world to the classroom with additional materials that explain the history of St. Peter’s Basilica and how it is preserved digitally with the help of AI. Whether you are repairing ancient mosaics, enhancing the Renaissance architecture, or guaranteeing Bernini’s iconic Baldachin is high, students will actively participate in the preservation of cultural heritage – everything within the blocked world of MINECRAFT.

This project shows us how technology – especially AI – can help us preserve historical places intact for future generations. This Minecraft experience is part of the Vatican, Icoem and Microsoft collaboration to make St. Peter’s basilica accessible to everyone, maintaining the emblematic church using digital technologies.

The project began with the creation of AI’s digital twin using sophisticated photogrammetry and AI techniques. AI for a good Laboratory of Microsoft has delivered the technology needed to process and analyze the photogrammetry data they have collected. To expand this immersive training in classrooms, Microsoft and Vatican have agreed with Minecraft Education to create Peter is here.
