Mexico is preparing to take migrants from us after Trump returns

No doubt he recognizes the potential stress of President Trump’s emergency declaration on the US border.

There are currently about 5 million undocumented Mexicans in the United States, and the prospect of a massive return could quickly saturate and overwhelm border cities like Juarez and Tijuana.

That’s a concern for Jose Maria Garcia Lara, director of Juventud 2000’s 2000 migrant shelter in Tijuana. As he showed me around the facility, which is already close to capacity, he says there is very little room that could fit more families.

“If we have to, maybe we can put some people in the kitchen or the library,” he says.

There comes a point, though, where there’s simply no room left, and gifts of food, medical supplies, blankets and hygiene products will be thin.

“We are being hit on two fronts. First, the arrival of Mexicans and the arrival of other migrants fleeing violence,” Mr. Garcia said.

“We’re also going to have mass deportations. We don’t know how many people are going to come across the border that need our help. Those two things together could create a huge problem.”
