Meta ends corporate DEI programs

The meta tech giant on Friday ended its major diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs effective immediately, joining a growing group of companies to back DEI initiatives.
Axios reports, citing a memo to Meta employees explaining that the company is ceasing operations immediately. DEI program for recruitment, training and supplier selection.
The company told employees that “the legal and policy landscape around diversity, equity and inclusion efforts is changing,” in a memo from Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources, according to a report by Axios.
Meta confirmed the Axios report in response to an inquiry from FOX Business.

Gale’s memo cites recent Supreme Court decisions that “signal how courts will approach DEI” that prompted the change.
“The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is perceived by some as a practice that offers preferential treatment to some groups over others,” Gale wrote in a memo reported by Axios.

Meta’s announcement comes after it announced earlier this week that it would complete the fact-checking program.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company plans to replace them with community notes similar to the X.
Several other prominent companies have pushed back on DEI’s policy in recent months.
On Monday, McDonald’s announced it was ending some of its DEI policies, saying that while it was committed to inclusion, it was abandoning its “aspirational representation goals” and ending its DEI pledge to suppliers.The company also changed its renamed the diversity team to the Global Inclusion Team and completed external inquiries on the topic.

The fast-food giant’s decision follows similar changes made in 2024 by Walmart, Ford Motor Co., John Deere, Lowe’s and Toyota.
In addition, a federal appeals court in mid-December rejected Nasdaq’s diversity rules which was previously approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
