Massive tuna goes for $1.3 million at Japan auction

During the auction held at the Japanese fish market in Tokyo, a company spent seven drams to acquire a huge tuna.

According to a translated press release, the £600 worth of tuna went to Japan’s Onodera Group, which runs sushi restaurants and businesses in other industries.

A staggering offer of $1.3 million (207 million yen) brought the company massive bluefin tuna.

The seven-figure sale was part of Toyosu Market’s first tuna auction of 2025, Onodera Group said in a press release. It was held on Sunday.

Japan’s national tourism organization calls Toyosu Market “the world’s largest fish market.” People sell tuna and other seafood there, as well as fruits and vegetables.

Onodera Group reported that it has harvested the first tuna for five consecutive years.This was also done in 2018, according to the company’s press release.

In the past 26 years, the market has seen only one other New Year’s tuna fetch more than this year’s $1.3 million. AFP reports. It is reported that the fish sold in 2019 cost 333.6 million yen.

“The first tuna is something that is meant to bring good luck. Our wish is that people eat this and have a great year,” Onodera’s Shinji Nagao said over the weekend, according to AFP.
