Marvel 1943 Writer Talks Wakanda, Cap/Black Panther Dynamic
The upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of the Hydra puts players in the shoes of Captain America and black panther as they become uneasy allies to stop the Nazis during WWII. If that’s not already appealing enough for you, the game comes courtesy of Skydance and Amy Hennig, director and writer of titles like the first three Uncharted games and The legacy of Cain series.
So far, Marvel’s crop of triple-A games have been set in the relative present, but Hennig spoke with Entertainment Weekly about how the game is informed by the World War II setting. As she tells it, it allows her and co-writers Mark Bernardin and Todd Stashwick to tell a story in the vein of action-adventure films set in that era. Think of a Mission Boys movie where Nazis are killed or beaten, and it looks like you’ll have a good idea of what to expect here. The ultimate goal, according to Hennig, is to give players “the look, feel and sound (of) watching a great Marvel movie or TV show, but you control the action.”
Since Marvel 1943 is “world travel stories,” players will go to various locations, including occupied Paris and the Azzuri’s home nation of Wakanda. In the game, it is isolated from the outside world and protected by an “impenetrable jungle,” but Hennig said the people of Wakanda are “entangled” in the war. As much as they have taken a position of non-intervention, “the world is getting smaller and they have to protect their interests. (…) You can shoot down planes that might want to fly over Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?” This question will be explored through the eyes of Azzuri and Steve, plus their respective primary allies, Wakanda spy Nanali and roaring commando Gabe Jones – all four are said to be able to they play all the time marvel 1943, so everyone will probably have something to say about it.
Marvel 1943: Rise of the Hydra expected to be released in 2025. for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
