“That’s all, I am Tyler (Ward) expecting a girl,” Russell, 25, said during a recent taping “got it from my mom” podcast “I’m very excited.”
Ward, 40, immediately ran to the stage rub Russell’s belly before taking his place in the crowd.
“Straight from american idol, I didn’t know,” said Russell, who was a season 22 finalist. “So it’s been a journey. I’m really excited and looking forward to it.”
Russell was joined by her mother, Patsyin an episode that also teased her reaction to news of her daughter’s pregnancy.
“I’ve always said, ‘Amy and Tyler are having a baby,’ because they’re both going to have to go through (it),” Patsy said. “It’s so true. I keep sending these girls “I can’t wear anything, I’m fat” memes to Tyler.
While Russell and Ward didn’t publicize much of their relationship, he played a major role in it Idol travel.
“I really feel this clear voice saying, ‘You have to do the work,’ and I think it was just like that. I’m so tired of listening to this inner voice that constantly criticizes us,” explained Russell, who tried to enter the singing competition without telling her mother. “I just said, ‘I want to prove everybody wrong.’ … Everyone said, ‘She probably won’t do it.’
She added: “I remember even looking at Tyler and thinking, ‘I’m going to do this and I’m not going to hide anymore.’ I remember when MeeMaw died and we just had to be alone with her, me I remember holding her handjust like, “I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to do something with my gift.” It was almost like a terrible praise that I was doing.’
Then Russell remembered Lynn saying to her, “God, don’t give a plumber tools he won’t use.” (Lin died in 2022 at the age of 90.)
“She always said, ‘He gave you a present.’ You have to use it. And yes, I’m navigating it and I’m still navigating it today, but I knew this might be the place to do it.”
Russell auditioned Idol featuring a piano rendition of an original song called “Skinny” that was a collaboration with Ward.
“I released this song with Song House, and Tyler actually runs Song House,” she said. He said, “You have to do it. We just have to release the song.’ Then when I saw all the reviews about it, I thought, “This is bigger than me.” I need to get out of the way.’ … Graduation (was) special.”
