King Charles honors Carey Mulligan in the annual New Year honors list
Oscar nominee. Carey Mulliganformer England football coach Gareth Southgate and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan among the names recognized King Charles III in his year List of New Year’s awards.
According to Great Britain Cabinet of Ministersover 1,200 people from all walks of life have been chosen to be honored for their achievements and services to British society. The list of awards for 2025 was announced on Tuesday, December 31.
Mulligan, 39, was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) along with Julia and Black pigeons actressesSarah Lancashirefor services to drama. “It’s an unexpected treat,” said the 60-year-old from Lancashire Guardian. Meanwhile, Mulligan rose to fame with her starring role in 2009 Educationfor which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She received two more nominations for Best Actress in 2021 A promising young woman and 2024 Maestro.
Southgate, Khan and the actor Stephen Fry all received knighthoods from the King for services to football, public service and mental health awareness respectively.
One of the most prestigious honors a British-born person can receive is being made a lady or knight by a member of the royal family. “When you are recognized, you feel a bit ‘shrill’, but I think the most emotional thing is when I think of my childhood, of my terrible misfortune, poverty and stupidity, and all that led to so many failures , like a child,” Fry said. “And for my parents, really, what trouble. I mean, every time the phone rang, they were like, “God, what has Steven done now?” It was kind of a joke in the family.”
“I never dreamed growing up on a council estate in south London that I would one day be mayor of London,” Khan said. “It has been the honor of my life to serve the city I love and I will continue to build the fairer, safer, greener and more prosperous London that all the capital’s communities deserve.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the awards list celebrated the “unsung heroes” of British society.
“Every day, ordinary people go out and do extraordinary things for their communities,” Starmer said. “They represent the very best of Britain and the core value of service that I put at the heart of everything this government does. The New Year’s honors list recognizes more of these unsung heroes, and I thank them for their incredible contributions.”
