Karnataka HC halts Ola, Uber, Rapido bike taxi services until regulations in place
In the recent instruction, the Karnatakan Senior Court ordered a dependence on bicycle taxi services by the offered by passengers operators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido.
This decision, which was handed over by BM Shyam Prasad, is scheduled to stop these services as long as the state government does not provide appropriate regulations under vehicles. This action stems from the March Government’s March notice last year, which prohibited bicycle taxi, citing the lack of electric bisexuals by swimming platforms and the supposed policy abuse.
The earlier ban on bicycle taxis was connected with the recall of the Carnataka Electric Bicycle Taxi Scheme, which was first invested on July 14, July 20. Designed to promote electric vehicles, the scheme has not achieved its desired results.
Justice Shyam Prasad has ruled the platforms to terminate their actions in six weeks and instructed the government to ensure the compliance of this Directive.
Minister of Transport Ramalinga Redi welcomed the court’s decision, saying that the government was given three months to develop the necessary regulations. He noted that the lack of the regulations of the platforms based on the attachments caused security problems for users.
In August 2021, one judge bench was further guided by the authorities to prevent the “action of coercion” against Repido, allowing his actions because of the lack of special government regulations. Rapido, which has been supported by Westbridge Capital and Nexus Venture partners, has been providing bicycle taxi services in Bengalur since 2016. The ongoing lack of regulatory simplicity presented legal and operational challenges for bicycle taxi services offered in the region.
The Bengaluru Bicycle Taxi market is fraught with tension, frequent clashes, which stem between car drivers and bicycle taxi operators. Last year, incidents were reported about the drivers of cars blocking bicycles and even engaged in physical confrontations with videos of these cases.
It was the first Carnate State to represent a policy of promoting electric bicycle taxis. However, the government has not understood a strong reaction that the platforms are encouraged, officials said economic times. Despite the newly created EV announcements, lack of licensing applications was presented.
In October 2023, Delhi resolved uncertainty by implementing a policy that allows bicycle taxis, but exclusively on electric bicycles. Maharashtra recently allowed bicycle taxis, although certain conditions and minimum fleet size should be met.
