Justin Baldoni recalled an awkward hug with Britney Spears

During an interview in January 2017 FuseBaldoni, 40, recalled the awkward moment he interacted with the pop superstar when she guest-starred in Jane the Virgin.
“I know she was a fan of the show,” he recalled. “We were filming and then a few of us who weren’t in scenes with her came to watch one of her scenes. Since I tweeted her and she tweeted back, I approached her (too) so I guess we were friends, but we weren’t. I came up and hugged her tightly and I think I scared her.’
After the moment, Baldoni saw his co-stars laugh, leaving the actor wondering, “Did I just stalk Britney Spears?”
“I was a huge Britney Spears fan in high school. What teenager wasn’t?” he asked. “The guest star I was most excited to work with was Britney Spears. And then it turned out that I did not have time to work with her. And there was not a single scene with Raphael and Britney Spears – probably at her request.”
Baldoni played Rafael Solano Jane the Virgin for nearly 100 episodes between 2014 and 2019. During Season 2, the show welcomed Spears, 43, as a guest star, where she played alone.
“I tweeted her. I was going to bring a poster from her Live (from) Las Vegas I didn’t do it because I don’t have it,” Baldoni recalls. “I was joking. But I think she thought I was serious.”

In December 2024, 37-year-old Lively sued Baldoni for sexual harassment. The suit claims the meeting was held to address Lively’s claims that there was a “hostile work environment” on the set. She also accused the actor of launching a campaign of “social manipulation” against her to “destroy” her reputation.

Baldoni struck back a few days later his own suitwhere he was listed as one of 10 plaintiffs sue The New York Times for $250 million after Lively’s lawsuit was announced. Baldoni’s lawsuit alleged that Lively conducted a “strategic and manipulative” smear campaign against him and “cherry-picked” communications without mentioning key details.
Press secretary The New York Times said the publication stands by the story and plans to “vigorously defend against the lawsuit.”
