Josh Inglis ruled out of Sydney Test after calf strain
Australian safety batsman and wicket keeper Josh Inglis has been ruled out with a mild calf strain. He suffered the injury while playing during the fourth Test at the MCG, which means he will miss the final Test against India in Sydney. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the news and said they will manage Inglis’ recovery carefully with an eye on the upcoming Test tour to Sri Lanka.
Inglis was from Australia the only replacement batsman in the team on day three after all-rounder Beau Webster was released Big Bash League (BBL) homework. Sharing sub-camping responsibilities with Sean Abbott, Inglis took the strain. CA announced his official withdrawal from the squad, although he was unlikely to play in Sydney barring an injury to the playing eleven.
Inglis’ BBL participation in Jeopardy
The injury is a major setback for Inglis’ BBL side Perth Scorchers. He had already featured in two matches against the Hobart Hurricanes and the Melbourne Renegades, played between the third and fourth Tests. However, with just 22 days to recover before Australia’s Test squad leaves for the UAE pre-tour camp, his immediate availability for the BBL remains in doubt.
CA’s priority is to ensure Inglis is fit for the two-Test series in Sri Lanka, starting on January 29. Given his ability against spin, Inglis is a strong contender to make his Test debut as a specialist batsman in Galle. Your recovery schedule will be closely monitored to maximize your preparation.
Replacement announcement pending
CA is yet to announce a replacement batsman for the Sydney Test. Nathan McSweeney could return to the squad due to his versatility, despite being dropped ahead of the Christmas Day Test. Webster, although released for the BBL, remains on standby and available if required.
Australia’s fast bowling reserves remain strong with Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott remaining with the squad. Concerns over Mitchell Starc’s back discomfort on the third day were eased after the paceman was declared fit to bowl. However, it wasn’t necessary as Australia quickly ended India’s first innings.
