The 23-year-old gymnast is currently appealing a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision that demoted her from third place to fifth place in the women’s floor exercise final.
Romania’s Ana Barbosu first scored higher than Chile after the American finished her own. Later, at the request of the US coach, the referees reviewed the footage, changed the score and promoted Chile to third place, prompting initial controversy and a violent reaction from the Romanians.
Instead, the decision to award the medal to Chile resulted in the first Black podium in Olympic gymnastics history, alongside teammate Simone Biles and Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade.
But then, on the final day of the Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Chile’s appeal had been submitted after one minute of time and changed its score to drop it back to fifth place. The following day, on August 11, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) determined that Chile should return the medal.
However, after the Olympics ended in August, USA Today reported that Chile and the rest of the US Olympic team “no intentionThey continue to protest against the decision of the IOC regarding the return of the medal.
Chile’s lawyers argued that its coach had indeed made the request on time and that there was video evidence to prove it, and that the official who decided to strip Chile of its medal had ties to Romania.
“Chile asks the Supreme Court to find that the CAS decision is procedurally flawed for two reasons,” Chile’s lawyers said. to Olympics.com.

“First, CAS violated Chile’s fundamental ‘right to be heard’ by refusing to consider video evidence showing that its request was timely submitted, in direct contradiction to the findings in the CAS decision.
“Secondly, the entire CAS process was unfair because Chile was not properly informed that CAS panel president Hamid G. Gharavi had a serious conflict of interest in canceling Chile’s bronze medal and awarding it instead to a Romanian gymnast: Mr. Gharavi has acted as counsel for Romania for almost ten years and has actively represented Romania during CAS arbitration.
Chiles also appealed to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court to overturn the CAS decision. He claimed that he was not given a fair opportunity to defend himself and that CAS did not properly review the video evidence.
Chiles and his teammates have been open about the emotional toll the medal loss took on him in the months since the Olympics ended.
Chiles gave his first sit-down interview on the incident during a panel this week Forbes Power Women Summit In September 2024. When asked about the topic, the gymnast choked up and burst into tears.
“For me, everything that’s going on isn’t about the medal, you know, it’s about the color of my skin,” Chiles said.
Chiles previously claimed in a statement sent to X on August 15 that social media users were facing “racially motivated attacks”. When Chile won the bronze medal, it marked the first gymnastics podium in Olympic history by three black athletes.

“It’s just that there were things that led to this position to be an athlete, and I felt like everything was unraveling.”
The controversy led to an international investigation into the referees who scored the goal. The Center for Arbitration in Sport (CAS) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) released a joint statement on August 15 condemning the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the judging panel for the result.
“If the FIG had implemented such a mechanism or regulation, a great deal of heartache would have been avoided,” the CAS ad-hoc panel said. “The Council hopes that the FIG will take the consequences of this case into consideration for the future of these three extraordinary Athletes, as well as other Athletes and their supporting staff, so that this does not happen again.”
