Johnny Depp’s lawyers were ‘concerned’ he might ‘lose his temper’

Speaking on A&E’s “Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath,” the two attorneys who helped Johnny Depp win his defamation case against Amber Heard admitted they initially feared they had made the wrong decision in allowing the actor to testify during the trial.
“The only thing that worries us is whether he will lose his temper,” said one of the lawyers, Benjamin Chu. Page six.
Choo then explained that the usual strategy of the “other side” is to do “everything possible” to provoke Depp to show his anger.
If successful, the strategy could potentially lead jurors to believe Heard’s claims of domestic violence, as mentioned in the article that became the basis for the defamation lawsuit.

However, despite the risk involved in Depp’s testimony, Chew and other lawyers agreed to the move, hoping it would “humanize” him in front of jurors and help them understand why “hitting the woman he loved was something , which he is simply not capable of.”

Johnny Depp’s lawyers believe the actor’s use of humor undermined Amber Heard’s strategy

When Depp finally testified in April 2022, his lawyers’ fears were allayed: the actor not only kept his cool, but also destabilized the approach of Heard’s lawyer, Ben Rothenborn.
During his testimony, he decided to respond to some of Heard’s attorney’s questions with jokes, such as, “I attacked a couple of offices, but I didn’t attack Ms. Heard,” when a video of him acting erratically was shown, according to Griffin.
He also replied, “I mean, isn’t happy hour anytime?” when Rothenborn asked if “the actor sometimes drinks whiskey in the morning.”
According to Chu, by using humor, Depp was able to “really undermine any serious point that Amber’s lawyer was trying to make.”

The actor received compensation in the amount of 15 million dollars

At the end of the trial, Depp emerged victorious, with a jury awarding him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
In a statement after the sentencing, he thanked the jury for their decision, saying they had “given me my life back”.
He added: “From the outset, the purpose of bringing this case was to uncover the truth, regardless of the outcome. Telling the truth was something I owed to my children and to all those who remained steadfast in their support of me.”
Amber Heard was unhappy with the outcome of the trial

Meanwhile, Heard expressed her disappointment with the decision through her representative, calling it a setback for women.
She shared, “I am heartbroken that the mountains of evidence are still not enough to counter my ex-husband’s disproportionate power, influence and influence.”
“I’m even more disappointed by what this sentence means for other women,” Hurd added. “This is a failure. It turns the clock back to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It rejects the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously.”
