Jimmy Carter has died: the longest-lived US president has died at the age of 100
Former president Jimmy Carter died on Sunday 29 December. He was 100 years old.
“My father was a hero not only to me, but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and selfless love,” Carter’s son said. Chip said in a statement released through his eponymous Carter Center. “My brothers, sister and I shared it with the rest of the world through these shared beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”
Carter became the longest-living former president in US history in March 2019 when he surpassed the late George W. BushWorld Health Organization died in November 2018 aged 94 years and 171 days. Carter and his wife of 76 years, Rosalyn Carterwere also the first couple with the longest marriage, ahead of Bush and Barbara Bush.
Before his death, the Carter Center, the former president’s foundation, announced in February 2023 that he was admission to hospice.
“After a series of brief hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care in lieu of further medical intervention,” the statement said. “He has the full support of his family and medical team.”
Nine months later, Rosalyn end-of-life care has also begun. The Carter Center confirmed this on November 19, 2023 she died “peacefully”. at the age of 96 years.

He stated this in December 2015 he was cancer freemonths after metastatic melanoma spread throughout the bodyincluding to his brain. Three and a half years later, he underwent surgery for a broken hip. In October 2019, Jimmy fell twice more at his home in Georgia. Although the first fall left him with 14 stitches above his left eye, he traveled to Nashville to work with Habitat for Humanity volunteers and help build a house. In November 2019, he was admitted to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to undergo a procedure to relieve pressure on his brain caused by bleeding from a recent fall.
Jimmy, who was the first US president to be born in a hospital, grew up in Plains, Georgia with three siblings: Gloria, Ruth and Billy Carter. He attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology before entering the Naval Academy in 1943. While studying at the academy, he met Rosaline, who was friends with his sister Ruth. The couple married in 1946 after Jimmy graduated. He later joined the U.S. Navy in the submarine program before leaving active duty in 1953 to take over the family peanut business in Georgia after his father’s death.
An active member of the Democratic Party, Jimmy decided to run for office in the early 1960s. He served in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967. Three years later, he was elected governor.
At the time, the civil rights activist and evangelical Christian was not widely known outside his home state. However, he managed to stand out in the 1976 presidential election and defeat the incumbent Republican president Gerald Ford to become the 39th POTUS.

During his four years in office, he created the Department of Energy and the Department of Education, and made energy policy his top domestic priority. In foreign affairs, Jimmy achieved success by brokering the Camp David Accords.
Despite his achievements, Jimmy faced many challenges as commander-in-chief. In 1979, he gave the infamous “Crisis of Confidence” speech, in which he blamed the country’s problems on the bad mood of its citizens. He also struggled to pass legislation because of his often tumultuous relationship with Congress. In the final phase of his presidency, he was criticized for his handling of the Iran hostage crisis, which left dozens of Americans captive for 444 days.
Jimmy ran for re-election in 1980 but Ronald Reagan won popular votes and voters.
After leaving the Oval Office in 1981, Jimmy was widely praised for his humanitarian work. He has worked extensively with Habitat for Humanity and founded the human rights organization The Carter Center. In 2002, Jimmy received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to find peace in international conflicts.

Jimmy preserved his and Rosaline children are sons Jack, James and Donnell and a daughter Amy — and more than 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
