The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that more than 130 Palestinian journalists have been killed since the conflict began. Israel has not allowed foreign journalists to enter Gaza except for military deployments.

Israel has banned the pan-Arab Al Jazeera network and accused six of its Gaza correspondents of being militants. The Qatar-based broadcaster denies the allegations and accuses Israel of trying to cover the conflict, which focuses mainly on civilian casualties from Israeli military operations.

Separately, the Israeli military said a 35-year-old reservist was killed during fighting in central Gaza on Thursday morning. A total of 389 soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the ground operation began more than a year ago.

The conflict began when Hamas-led militants crossed the border, attacking nearby army bases and farming communities. They killed about 1200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped about 250 people. About 100 hostages are still in Gaza, at least a third are believed to be dead.

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 45,000 Palestinians were killed as a result of the Israeli air and ground attack. More than half of the dead are said to be women and children, but it is not known how many of the dead were combatants. Israel claims to have killed more than 17,000 militants without providing evidence.

The attack caused widespread destruction and displaced nearly 90% of the population of 2.3 million. Hundreds of thousands of people huddled in squalid tent camps along the coast with little protection from the cold, wet winter.
