The Israeli Cabinet of Ministers, which was scheduled to take effect on Sunday, was due to meet on Thursday morning to ratify the agreement.

“Hamas is abandoning parts of the agreement reached with mediators and Israel in order to demand last-minute concessions,” Netanyahu’s statement said. “The Israeli Cabinet will not convene until the mediators notify Israel that Hamas has accepted all elements of the agreement.”

Following Israel’s announcement, a senior Hamas official, Izzat al-Rishaq, said in a statement that the Palestinian group remained committed to the cease-fire agreement brokered on Wednesday.

Earlier, several Israeli families and supporters staged a sit-in in front of Netanyahu’s office, urging his cabinet not to sign the prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas.

Yehoshua Shani, the father of Capt. Uri Shani, who was killed during the fighting, said in a video message: “Do not sign an agreement that means surrender, sacrifice the stolen remains and give up Israel’s security.”

“Come here before the cabinet meeting and join us in asking the prime minister to stop signing the surrender deal with Hamas.”
