Why Tom Cruise’s latest film Mission: Impossible failed at the box office

Despite high expectations, Mission: Impossible – Fallout: Part One failed at the box office, grossing $570 million worldwide on a $291 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
That’s a significant drop from the $791 million grossed by its predecessor, Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), which was made for just $180 million.
However, the film was well-received by critics, and much of its over-budget of $291 million was due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film also faced stiff competition, debuting just a week before the much-anticipated Barbenheimer phenomenon Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
