Insta360 X5 camera hands: larger sensors, improved low light work

Insta360 x5 ($ 550) is the most action camera 8K 360 of the company, and although it remains a different proposal for traditional action cameras, it is of power, more reliable and easier to use.

X5 has a larger 1/1.28-inch sensor compared to ‘S 1/2-inch sensor providing more details and a remarkable boost to low light. The problem with the wide -angle camera is that the details are lost, especially in low -lit settings. The specification builds on this time around this significantly, including up to 13.5 stops per dynamic range.

Over the years, I have tried to include 360-degree cameras in my work process, using them on both vacation and events. However, much of the content I capture is either in the evening or in a dark place, literally the main weakness of these types of cameras. In an attempt to cope with these shooting conditions, the Insta360 introduced a new Purevideo mode, which with AI reducing noise and dynamic range optimization for clearer, brighter frames under low light conditions. It is not perfect, but it moves a gloomy video from unusable to decent, if not straight. With a 5nm AI chip and two image chip, the X5 can also capture active HDRs with up to 5.7k 60 FPS.

This chip array also reduces processing time. The Insta360 does not specify how much faster, but the anecdotal processing of the device and the transfer of files to my smartphone were noticeably faster. The videos are kept almost instantly in the camera, while maintaining a few short clips of my phone, it took about 30 seconds, compared to minutes on previous devices.

While the X5 does not offer higher resolution video from its predecessor, it is collected in even more shooting options, such as Instaframe, which quickly becomes my shooting mode. Instaframe can record a typical “flat” video and a 360-degree video at the same time. The notion is that this gives a “instant shared” flat video without breaking or heavy editing.

But when you need to, Insta360 smartphone app on Insta360 is further improved, with some incredibly useful editing tools. You can repeat a 360-degree video to focus on the user or force one view. Everything is also quite intuitive, which is a trait that should not be ignored.

X5 an incredibly versatile tool and there is something to say about a camera that can capture everythingS However, under less favorable conditions (or when you are not a man on the camera), you may prefer more simple settings and methods for shooting a traditional action camera.

The X5 performs better in lower light, but in recent years it has not been in line with the improvements we have seen in low light smartphone photography. Although I was cautiously walking in the late evening to shoot low -light footage, there was vibration after effect as the camera struggled to stabilize the frames. This can be reduced by staying stationary, but even with Purevideo (which can also be a little too aggressive noise address), it is still not there. I will continue to test the camera and provide additional impressions. Insta360 pressed the firmware update to x5 hours before posting this story, adding 4K60fps recording to one lens mode and a few bumps to other record modes.

Designer, you need to get really close to find out the difference between X5 and X4. They are largely the same size, although the Insta360 has switched to a polygon in the front, with a microphone panel (and a new wind net).

The battery compartment and the microSD slot are fixed with a double lock, where a microSD slot lives and are protected from hard covers with sliding locks. Both sides of the camera have a suffocating texture, with recording and buttons of mode nestled under the screen.

With the same thread installation, Insta360 existing selfie sticks will work with their latest camera, although there are no quick charges due to hardware changes. The most important thing: the effect of Insta360 bullets time is still here –

Most of the settings of the settings, such as its predecessors, are on the download menus from, well, almost every side of the screen. Filling to the right will take you to the gallery while the handmade camera options are left. The switch and lock settings are located in the drop -down menu. There are many, but if you have used a smartphone, you need to find the familiar basic navigation.

There is a whole list of less remarkable Hardware enhancements to the X5 compared to the predecessor:

  • Scratch resistant glass lenses- which are removable

  • Battery with greater capacity that lasts up to 180 minutes

  • Faster charging battery (0 to 80 percent in 20 minutes)

  • A new built -in steel net of wind security

  • IP68 waterproofing up to 49 feet

  • Magnetic installation system

  • The “Twist to Shoot” recording feature to start recording by twisting a connected selfie stick

Insta360 x5 is already for sale, with a package of Essentials available for $ 660. The package includes an additional battery, a fast charging case, an “invisible” selfie stick, lens security and a wearing case. That’s $ 50 more than the Insta360 X4 launches. Improvements of both low -lit performance and new shooting modes can cost a price increase, but don’t expect CRISP 4K (or 8K) video if light is a problem.

The competition in this category remains relatively limited. Ricoh continues its Theta series, with a similar factor in camera shape, but seems to be focused on photos more than video, while the GOPRO Max 360 lacks features such as traditional 4K video capture, let alone an 8K record. The best alternatives are maybe the other 360 Insta360 cameras, like last year’s X4.

Although there are less major changes in specifications and design than last year, the Insta360 X5 is another step forward for this type of camera, both in image and simplifying how you share what you shoot.
