The veteran spinner ends his 106-Test career early in the third Test after rain left the five-match series level at 1-1.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket in all formats after his team’s third Test against Australia ended in a draw in Brisbane.

“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” the 38-year-old told reporters at the Gabba on Wednesday.

“As a cricketer I feel I have a bit of punch left in me but I would like to show that in club level cricket.”

Ashwin played just one of the three games of the five-Test series as he took a wicket in the Adelaide Test.

The 38-year-old scored 537 wickets at an average of 24.00 in 106 Tests, making him seventh on the all-time list and behind only Anil Kumble (619) for his country.

He also played in 116 one-day internationals and 65 Twenty20 internationals.

Ashwin made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011 and was also handy with the bat, scoring 3,503 runs with six centuries and 14 fifties.

The third match ended in a draw after rain interrupted Australia’s push for victory on the final day, raising the stakes for Melbourne as the series swapped for a traditional Boxing Day clash.

India were eight without loss when tea was called early due to lack of light as the tourists needed 267 runs for victory.

After the break, the match was interrupted by a heavy downpour, which prevented the game from resuming, and the series was tied at 1-1.

“We will take it in stride,” India captain Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation.

“We go to Melbourne confident that we can try to pull things together.”

Pat Cummins declared Australia’s second innings with seven on 89 to give India an incredible victory target of 275 runs as dark clouds gathered.

Cummins and partner Mitchell Starc bowled just 2.1 overs in India’s openers before play was suspended.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was four not out, KL Rahul was also four.

“Unfortunately, there was a lot of rain, there’s nothing you can do about it … I’m really proud of how the kids played,” Cummins said.

“We were ahead of the game … We ticked every box we could.”

Australia bowled out India for 260 after scoring 445 in the first innings, with rain causing rain throughout the match.

Australia led by 185 runs after taking India’s last wicket in the first hour of the fifth day, but rain denied them a chance to bat after lunch.

In search of quick runs, Australia reached 33 for five as Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah rounded out the top four with single-figure scores, a day later the pacemen combined for a daring 10th-wicket partnership to ensure India ran out the next run. .

Travis Head and Alex Carey (19 not out) briefly stopped the bleeding with a partnership of 27 before Head top-ordered Mohammed Siraj for 17.

Cummins hit 22 off 10 balls before Bumrah’s third wicket and declared five balls later.

Australia’s hopes of forcing a result were always hanging in the air, but with their attack a man down, their chances of victory were already slim.

All-rounder Josh Hazlewood was ruled out after picking up a calf injury, while there were concerns over the fitness of all-rounder Mitchell Marsh after taking only two knocks in the match.

Head was named man of the match after scoring 152 in Australia’s first innings and also scored a massive hundred in the hosts’ second Test victory in Adelaide.
