In Syria, the fate of French families, group camps remain uncertain

Six years after the collapse of the Islamic state group, six years later, thousands of women and children, group fighters were arrested in camps in northeastern Syria. Since 2019, these prisoners managed by Kurdish officials are under the jurisdiction of the non-state – those who cannot test them or offer less protection of international humanitarian law. This legal limbo can now change with the fall of the Assad regime. The new government in Damascus is expected to control the camps. Kurdish officials – and dozens of families themselves, including dozens of French citizens – are anxiously waiting for them to see what happened in the future.
