In Florida, a homeowner suspected of home invasion shot 2 people and killed 1 person

A Florida sheriff said intruders “should have expected to get hit” after spreading information about a homeowner. shot at two masked people tried to break into his house and killed someone.

“He knew something bad was going to happen and he didn’t stop,” MCSO Sheriff Rick Wells said during a news conference Friday. “He took his firearm (and) told his wife to go to safety.”

The homeowner fired several times, hitting Flores-Toledo “multiple times,” while Soto-Mella fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

“I sat on the lanai, the door was open,” John Nuceder, who was visiting a family member next door, told Fox 13. “I distinctly heard three shots.”

Jorge Nestevan Flores-Toledo, also known as Anibal Miller-Valencia, a 27-year-old Mexican national, was killed in the shooting, according to Fox 13.

Authorities said Flores-Toledo was in critical condition before being taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died early Friday morning.

“Here it is Florida State” Wells said. “If you want to break into someone’s house, you should expect to get shot.”

Deputies tracked down Soto-Mella, who was in the country illegally after her 90-day visa expired in September. K9 units and arrested him a few blocks away, according to the sheriff’s office. The scene was secured and everyone who did not pose any threat to society was brought to justice.

Detectives are currently investigating Flores-Toledo’s background and “want to understand” why she and Soto-Mella targeted the home, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office Friday afternoon.

“We’re trying to get what we can from the (surviving) suspect,” Wells said. “He’s being somewhat cooperative, but he’s not telling us everything.”

At the hearing, Fox 13 reported that Soto-Mella used an interpreter to tell the judge that he did not have a gun.

Manatee County homicide detectives said they believe other people may have been involved in the crime.

Flores-Toledo, also known as Anibal Miller-Valencia, was arrested in Oak Brook, Illinois in 2023 and served four months in jail for burglary before being released on parole in November, according to authorities. He had an active warrant for a parole violation and was considered “armed and dangerous.”

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News about whether the host faces any charges. He was not identified Friday night.
