Hundreds of animals were killed on Friday a fire broke out Dallas mall.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said in a statement that 579 animals, mostly small birds, died of smoke inhalation at a pet store in the Plaza Latina mall.

Dallas Fire Rescue said heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building when firefighters arrived. FOX Dallas informed.

It took them about two hours to fully extinguish the fire.

The fire never reached the animals, but the pet store was filled with smoke. In addition to the birds, Evans also lost chickens, hamsters, two dogs and two cats.

“Unfortunately, all the animals in the store died of smoke inhalation while DFR personnel were conducting a search and rescue,” Evans said.

No one was injured during the fire. However, the fire caused significant damage to the structure, including the partial collapse of the roof.

The shopping center includes many small businesses and is described on its Facebook page as “a place where people can eat and buy all kinds of Latino goods and services.”

A post in Spanish on the page asked for prayers for the families working there.

Dallas Fire Rescue Fox News did not immediately respond to Digital’s request for comment.
