Honor follows Samsung and Google to offer 7 years Android updates
The phone manufacturer will now offer seven years Android OS and security updates to it Flagship Series of five, the company told Cnet before that MWC Main note in Barcelona on Sunday. This is a commitment that puts honor in the same software league as Samsung and Googlewhich are the only two companies that offer this level of support.
Two additional years of Android support will extend the life cycle of honest phones, starting with the Honor Magic 7 Pro, which will allow people to keep their expensive leading devices for a long time or to hand them over to others. Most importantly, they will be able to do this safe from the knowledge that they are secureAs long as it still offers superb performance and the latest functions.
“This engagement deals with the main search for today’s users – devices that are not only powerful but also reliable, secure and durable,” said Fay Fang, President of Honor products. “Updates allow devices to develop along with the needs of the user.”
In Europe, where the commitment will first come into force, this summer comes EU Ecodesine Directive, which will require phone manufacturers to provide at least five years of the GA updates in an attempt to reduce electronic waste. The Honor bet to provide seven years of support not only exceeds what is required, but also shows a commitment to provide value to telephone owners.
There are many challenges that are in guaranteeing seven years of Android updates, Fang said. The older hardware is not necessarily built to maintain the latest systems and functions and sometimes struggles to maintain its smooth performance after updates. The solution, she added, is “joint coordination with chip manufacturers and ecosystem partners such as Google, requiring deep partnerships that extend beyond traditional maintenance cycles.”
You may assume that the rapid dissemination of AI requirements on phones can only make these updates difficult, but Fang said it wasn’t. “The continuous presentation of Google AI updates is mostly applicable -based, not OS levels,” she said. “The complexity of AI functions is not a challenge or difficulty, but a touch stone for the vision of Honor to build a leading global ecosystem of AI device.”
This is a “big step” for honor that puts it on an equal footing with Samsung and Google market leaders, said Ben Wood, CCS Insight’s chief analyst. “This is not a small endeavor given the costs and engineering resources associated with extensive many years of support,” he added. “It will be interesting if other Chinese smartphone manufacturers feel forced to follow.”
