Hilary Duff is breaking down her favorite holiday family traditions
Hilary Duff is still working hard to keep family traditions alive this holiday season, even though her family will be spending Christmas on the road.
“We’re actually traveling for Christmas this year and it’s really exciting,” Duff, 37, exclusively shares in the latest issue Us Weekly. “I think I like this whole holiday season. I know it’s chaotic, but I really enjoy being in town, all the festivities, like we’re going on a holiday road trip and we’re going to pick out our tree, we always play tag on the Christmas tree. It’s one of my favorite family activities.”
One of Duff’s personal holiday traditions happens when her kids aren’t home. “We put up the Christmas tree together, and when the kids go to school, I’ll replace all the decorations and put them where they belong,” she quips.
Duff shares her eldest child, son Luke, 12, with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie. She and her husband, Matej Alewelcomed their first child together, daughter Banks, 6, a year before they tied the knot in 2019. They continued to grow their family with the arrival of daughter Mae, 3, in 2021. Duff and Como, 37, welcomed a third childdaughter of Townes, May 3rd.
This year, Duff has introduced a new tradition that’s fun for the whole family. “We used to take night baths with hot cocoa,” she says. “It’s a bit spoiled because we heat the pool and make it really warm, but we’re there for nighttime swimming and cocoa drinking. Sometimes I’ll have a glass of red wine. It’s really fun. We try to do it on weekdays, so the kids — it took about 30 minutes, but the kids feel like it’s something special and it’s not a normal night here.”
She adds: “We travel for Christmas and then we go skiing and that’s the end of the holidays.”

While the holidays bring a lot of excitement, they also bring stress, especially for parents. “Pregnancy is hard on moms,” says Duff us. “I wake up in the middle of the night saying, ‘Oh, I’ve got these things that I haven’t been able to deal with.’ … So, I’m slowly but surely getting ready and (I’m) excited. I love the holiday season so much, but being an adult and making it magical for so many people is just so much.”
To keep things on track, Duff works with Meta AI, which she describes as an “understanding partner.”
She explains, “It’s just something you can sort out your thoughts with, and it comes (arises) with ideas. … (If) my usual approach to this part of the holiday is a bit out of date, what can I do? Or (it might) help me put these lists together. ‘I already did it. What can I add to this? I’m going to be in that part of town.’ It’s really amazing that we have this assistant for people who don’t have access to a regular assistant in the first place. The other day I had to bring a snack and I said, “I have this, this, and this.” What can I do about it?’ And that helped me.”

She goes on to joke, “I have a personal assistant, and I even need one.”
