Henry Cavill lost the two main roles in the franchise to Robert Pattinson
When it comes to actors with multiple blockbuster franchises under their belt, few can compete like Robert Pattinson and Henry Cavill. Pattinson starred as the doomed Hufflepuff Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the brilliant dream vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight films and the most brooding Batman of all time in The Batman, earned himself a hat trick of a major franchise. Meanwhile, Cavill played Superman in Zack Snyder’s DC movies, August Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series The Witcher, and even had cameo version of Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine. (And that’s not even counting the fact that he also played Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s Enola Holmes and starred in the Hellraiser sequel!) Both men have serious star power, despite their very different approaches to acting and fame, and it turns out that once Pattinson got two different roles that Cavill might otherwise have gotten.
Just hearing that the two are potentially in the running for the same roles in the franchise makes one wonder how they would fare in each other’s shoes (Pattinson could make Geralt the Assassin, but Superman? He never could). in reality, they were both young actors, and Pattinson just happened to be right for the part. However, in another universe? We almost saw Henry Cavill as Edward and Cedric.
Pattinson was chosen for Harry Potter and Twilight instead of Cavill
According to old blog posts from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer found on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via GQ UK) in a chat with Cavill, the author originally wanted Cavill to play the film version of Edward Cullen, but he dropped out of the running as a potential blitz when he reached the age of 24.
In his July 2007 blog posts. Meyer laments that Cavill has aged because she couldn’t think of Edward as older than 21, saying, “The biggest disappointment for me is losing my perfect Edward. Henry Cavill is now twenty-four years old. Allow us a moment of silence to cry…” A few months later, Pattinson, who was just squeaking by age, was announced as Edward. Meyer also liked the idea of playing Cavill Carlisle Cullen, the adoptive father of the Cullen vampire clan, and the role eventually went to Nurse Jackie star Peter Facinelli. Maybe he’ll get a chance to play Cullen in the the proposed (and perhaps ill-advised) Twilight revival. Fortunately, there seems to be no crime between Cavill and Pattinson, as Cavill explained:
“I didn’t know they wanted to lock me up, and the internet wasn’t the tool it is now, so I didn’t find out until later. I said, ‘Oh, okay, that would be cool.'”
Cavill also tried for the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, but Pattinson’s audition was apparently a little more magicalbecause he got the role. With him seemingly set to play Superman in James Gunn’s DCEU film, Cavill joked that there might be a Batman vs. Superman throwback in the future to take care of the “rivalry,” but now it looks like that won’t happen either . .
Cavill and Pattinson franchise futures
Cavill’s tenure as Superman appears to be largely over David Carensuet in a cape for the foreseeable future of the DC Universe, and he also came out as Geralt, the future replaced for the final season with Thor’s talented younger brother, Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth. However, he is still associated with Enola Holmes 3, in which he reprises his role as the young detective’s famous father, as well as working on the Voltron movie, the Highlander reboot.and an adaptation of “Warhammer 40,000” for Amazon. It looks like Cavill fans will be well fed as there are many big franchise projects ahead.
Since ending his role as Edward, Pattinson has leaned toward more art-house and independent projects in an attempt to keep the young-adult franchise, so the only big franchise in his future is as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman: Part II, slated for release in in 2026. Fortunately, he still delivers wild and strange performancesalso as Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming film Mickey 17. The future looks bright, whether you’re excited to see Cavill reloading his pistols and looking handsome, or watching Pattinson glide across the scenery like a weird little gremlin.
