Police and protesters clashed after thousands of people gathered in Athens to demand justice for the victims of Greece’s deadliest rail crash, which killed 57 people.

In 2023, a passenger service carrying 350 people collided with a freight train near the Greek village of Tempi, causing the front cars to catch fire.

The main slogan of the protests was “I have no oxygen” – suggesting that many died not from the collision itself, but from a fire caused by banned chemicals on the freight train.

The accident led to widespread condemnation of safety standards on Greek railways, as well as the state’s attitude to the subsequent investigation.

The video shows police firing tear gas as protesters throw sticks and other objects at officers.
