I just read a really good patient book on spinal stenosis rehabilitation by physical therapist Terri Night: “Rehabilitating Your Own Spinal Stenosis: Strategies to Improve Your Spinal Health”. First of all, it is very encouraging to point out that many elderly people have spinal stenosis and have no symptoms. He points out that various factors, such as inflammation and hydration status, over which we have considerable control, play a major role in how severe symptoms can be. Over the years she has worked with many patients who he did they have severe symptoms, often worse than mine, and have improved significantly with the strategies outlined in the book, including aerobic exercise, stretching the spine and hips, strengthening the muscles around the spine, and lifestyle changes. A final discussion of surgical options follows if symptoms persist or if you have more severe symptoms such as numbness or loss of bladder control.

I took away some very good ideas on how to modify activities to avoid lumbar inflammation, as well as new exercises to try. I highly recommend this book to anyone with spinal stenosis.
