Close told the audience: “One of my most treasured possessions is a letter that Katharine Hepburn wrote to me, in which she described what we all do as this ‘horrible profession’, ‘this horrible profession’ and, let’s face it, delicious way to spend your life.”

But what happened next had CBS censors scrambling. In an unfiltered moment of raw passion, Close declared, “We’re all so damn blessed and lucky.”

For viewers at home, the sound cut off abruptly, muffled by Close’s choice of words. However, another opined: “She knows there’s a beep on regular TV and live events are only delayed by language and gestures. Hepburn’s sweet letter would have been more powerful if she had comically omitted that word, because everyone also knows that Hepburn was “salty.”
