Frat members at San Diego State University have been charged after a hostage was burned during a skit at a party

Four members San Diego State University The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity is facing criminal charges after a skit performed at a party last year led to the burning of a pledge.

Prosecutors said the immolated member suffered third-degree burns covering more than 16% of his body as a result of the scene, which was staged on February 17.

Caden Cooper, 22; Lucas Cowling, 20; On Monday, Christopher Serrano, 20, and Lars Larsen, 19, were each charged with at least one felony, and all four pleaded not guilty. Larsen was the person who was burned.

The charges include arson causing grievous bodily harm by negligence, conspiracy to commit a public nuisance and breaching a social landlord’s order. If convicted on all charges, the defendants face up to 7 years in prison.

All four indicted were either active members or pledges of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Cooper was president of the fraternity, Cowling was on the Pledge Council, and Serrano and Larsen were pledges, prosecutors said.

Larsen and Serrano, who are under the legal drinking age, also drank alcohol before the skit while with Cowling.

In recent years, university fraternities have engaged in activities that have led to investigations, and at least half a dozen people have been tested in the past two years, according to the university.

In 2020, the university investigated allegations that a fraternity leader encouraged drinking. It comes a year after the death of a freshman last night after falling from a bunk bed and cracking his skull after drinking with his brother.

The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity was already active probationary period by the university for violating its alcohol and substance abuse policy during an arson incident at a party nearly a year ago.

A skit at the party included Serrano setting Larsen on fire, prosecutors said.

Cowling, Serrano and Larsen planned the scene where Serrano burned Larsen, prosecutors said. Larsen was in the hospital for weeks with third-degree burns, mostly on her legs.

After the incident, Cowling, Larsen and Cooper lied to law enforcement investigates the incidentdeleted the evidence on social media and told other fraternity members to delete the evidence and not talk to anyone about what happened, according to prosecutors.

The four were released from custody and ordered to return to court on March 18 to prepare for a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 16.

They were ordered not to attend any fraternity parties or recruitment events and to abide by alcohol laws.
