Former Cowboys star Dez Bryant on coach Mike McCarthy’s departure: ‘Great move’

Time for Mike McCarthy According to multiple reports, the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is over.

According to a statement obtained by ESPN, the organization and McCarthy have mutually agreed to part ways long time cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

“Before we got to the point of contract negotiations, it was mutually clear that each of us would be better off going in different directions. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica, and his family the best. He has been a wonderful part of our community here.”

Jones also shared his appreciation for McCarthy, saying, “I have a lot of respect for Mike and he’s led the team through some very unique and difficult times during his tenure.”

The Cowboys are expected to begin their search for their next head coach immediately.

Shortly after news of McCarthy’s departure broke, former Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant weighed in on the situation. “Great move for the Dallas Cowboys!” Bryant wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday afternoon.

Bryant spent most of his life NFL career With the cowboys.

Moments later, Bryant took another jab at McCarthy as he shared his concerns about the prospect of the Boise State star running back. Ashton Jeanty landing in Dallas next season. Many mock drafts linked Jeanty, who rushed for 2,601 yards and finished second in Heisman Trophy voting this past season, to Dallas.

“If Dallas is thinking about drafting Ashton Jeanty.. Mike McCarthy is damned not the coach to draft him…”

The Cowboys’ rushing attack was largely ineffective this past season. In what turned out to be a widely criticized move, the team decided to sign running back Derrick Henry. In his first season with Henry, he rushed for 1,921 yards Baltimore Ravens.

McCarthy’s contract expired after a 7-10 season. Dallas was 12-5 each of the three years before that, but still hasn’t advanced past the divisional round of the NFC playoffs since the last Super Bowl at the end of the 1995 season.

Next season will be the Cowboys’ 30th since winning the last of five Super Bowl titles.

McCarthy was with him before he took the Dallas job after a full season away from coaching Packers for 13 seasons and had a record of 125-77-2 from 2006-18. He was 10-8 in the playoffs and led Green Bay to a Super Bowl title 14 years ago at AT&T Stadium, home of the Cowboys.
