Former Everton captain Don Hutchison has hit back at Neal Maupay following the striker’s recent social media post in which he took a swipe at the Toffees.

Hutchison said Maupay, on loan from Marseille from Everton, was a “failure” after the striker pointed at the Merseyside club at X following the 2-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Maupay, known for his troll who previously posted a Shawshank Redemption meme after leaving Goodison Park in the summer, wrote: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”

Although the 28-year-old is still owned by the Blues, Marseille are under an obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer, meaning he has played his last game for Everton.

Hutchison, who played for the Toffees in the Premier League between 1998 and 2000, replied: “Everton are obviously living rent-free in their heads.

“Encourage the Everton fans, knowing that every night he thinks about the big failure and that he couldn’t cope with playing at such a big club.”

Hutchison was not the only one to publicly criticize Maupay for his position.

Former boxer Tony Bellew, who supports Everton, hit back at X with: “P***k!”, while another Toffees fan, former Swansea City striker Lee Trundle, added : “You played for the club mate, have some respect. as a former player. Speaking like that (you are) part of the problem.”

Maupay signed for Everton from Brighton in 2022 for an undisclosed fee. During his time at Goodison Park, he scored one goal in the top flight in 29 appearances.

He has played regularly under Roberto de Zerbi at Marseille this season, making 12 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing four assists.

De Zerbi’s side are currently second in Ligue 1, ten points behind leaders PSG.
