Dreams of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Messiah remain very strong
after Dune: Part Two hit cinemas, directed by Denis Villeneuve, who achieved great success with the first Duneand enjoyed a similar blockbuster response to its sequel – understandably said it would rest from the world of Frank Herbert before ending the epic trilogy with Dune Messiah.
But last fallhe said he realizes his desire to return to Arrakis is greater than his desire for some down time – and a new interview suggests that could happen very soon indeed.
Talking to the shellVilleneuve was asked what his signature element was Dune there is experience so far. After explaining that he had a pinch moment Dune: Part Two was completed – just absorbing that he actually completed a Dune adaptation, something he called an “incredible privilege” — he admitted that even after all that work, he’s hungry for more.
“I think my biggest surprise in that regard is that I don’t want to run away from Arrakis. I’m still inspired to come back,” he told traders. “That’s the thing I was most surprised about. I felt it after Second partI will need a rest. I thought I would want to write a few movies or do a few things before I got back to Dune Messiah. But the images that came back to my mind, the appetite absolutely intact. This is the biggest surprise. I still want to go back to Arrakis.
He clarified that his return trip to Arrakis would be in service of Dune Messiah –and then he will be ready to continue. “It’s going to get unhealthy after that,” he joked.
No timeline yet for when Dune Messiah may appear, but we know that in June 2024. Warner Bros. set flag on December 18, 2026 for a Villeneuve project described only as an “event film.” (It is worth noting: by November 2024there is no nameless anymore Star Wars movie is also slated for that date.) Release dates are always subject to change, of course, but for now, this is the best information we have on when these sandworms might make an appearance again.
