Did Gervonta Davis just call off his fight with Lamont Roach?
Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis posted on Instagram that his March 1st fight with Lamont Roach has been cancelled. Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) did not explain why his fight was canceled.
Tank message: “The fight is crap to cancel.”
Fans on social media have greeted the cancellation with joy. They don’t want to see this albatross, especially since it’s on PPV. They see it as a mismatch, with super featherweight Roach (25-1, 10 KOs) standing no chance.
This troubled fight had already been rescheduled once since its original December 14 date, and fans have been critical of it since day one. The fight was moved out of that date due to a venue issue. It was expected to be cancelled, but instead Premier Boxing Champions rescheduled it for March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Lamont Roach posted a workout video clip on Instagram just minutes after Tank Davis’ cancellation post, suggesting he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. This could mean that Tank acted alone without telling anyone that his feud with Roach was off.
So there’s a chance the fight is still going because PBC hasn’t said anything about canceling, and they would have already if they had.
Considering the huge backlash this fight has received, Tank probably wishes it was canceled because the criticism the fight has generated is far worse than any of his past feuds.
The reason for this is that fans expect more from Davis now that this is his 11th year as a pro. He’s 30 years old, and it’s a big step back for him from his fight against Ryan Garcia in 2023. Fans want to see Tank fight like the best, and Roach is nowhere near that.
He’s an underpowered super featherweight, and he barely beat one of Tank’s knockout victims, Hector Garcia, by a 12-round split decision in November 2023 to win his WBA 130-pound title.
