On a popular TV show Buffy the Vampire SlayerCharisma Carpenter played Cordelia Chase, a member of the Slayer-led Scooby Gang who regularly battled monsters and other things that go bump in the night. When Carpenter left the show in Angel spinoff, she struggled even more creepy creatures next to Buffy’s ex-boyfriend. What most fans of this Joss Whedon franchise don’t realize, however, is that Charisma Carpenter battled a monster in real life, surviving a 1991 attack that could have easily killed her and her friends.
Charisma Carpenter Attack

It all started when the future Buffy The actor was swimming with a couple of friends at Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego. They were all thinking of nothing but serious fun in the sun, and they had no way of foreseeing the horrible event that was about to happen. Charisma Carpenter and her friends soon had to endure an attack from the last person they expected to attack them: a police officer.
The police officer in question was Henry Hubbard Jr., a 29-year-old cop who wasted no time threatening the trio of beachgoers. He pointed the gun at Charisma Carpenter but did not attack her directly; instead, he used a firearm to force her to tie up the two friends. Incredibly, she refused to do so (tell him, Cordelia!) and that gave one of her friends enough time to jump in and defeat Hubbard.
As tough as she is Buffy the Vampire Slayerit’s still wild to think that Charisma Carpenter is as strong-willed in real life, having survived what could have been a horrific attack because she refused to obey an armed assailant. Years later, the actor explained that her reaction was the result of an important lesson she learned at a very young age. “One of the things I was told when I was 10 years old is that whatever they’re going to do to you if they take you alone is going to be 10 times worse than if they had to do it right there,” she said. she
Incidentally, Charisma Carpenter’s quick thinking did more than save her and her friends…it also denied Hubbard the opportunity to attack future victims. She was holding his police flashlight, the chosen piece of evidence that helped convict this officer of a violent assault on the future Buffy a star He was eventually sentenced to 56 years in prison for a series of attacks on a beach in Los Angeles that included rape, robbery and attempted murder, and he likely would have continued to attack others had Carpenter and her friends not helped to detain him.
After the attack

As for Charisma Carpenter, she refused to let this attack define her life or who she is. Not only did she go on to later kill him (so to speak) further Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angelbut she would later host an appropriately titled Investigation Discovery series I have experienced evil. The show featured other survivors telling their own harrowing stories, and Carpenter’s own experiences helped her bring those stories to life, even if it was the closure the victims needed.
Probably Buffy fans, this is all probably old news, but I just found out about it. I honestly didn’t think I could respect Charisma Carpenter more after watching her easily become the best part of every show she’s been in, but knowing she’s survived a brutal attack in real life takes my respect to a whole new level. Go away, Buffy. There’s a new Slayer in town, and she knows exactly how to protect her friends every time a monster makes its move.
