It’s an unwritten rule of television that you can’t have a long-running sitcom and no make at least a few holiday-themed episodes. Thanksgiving episode? The ability to bring in big-name guest stars to play the main characters’ parents and relatives? Definitely. A Halloween episode? Dress the entire cast in silly and/or sexy costumes? Gold ratings.

And then there’s the Christmas episode. It’s a chance for even the most caustic series on television to open their Grinchy hearts to the unifying spirit of the season. (No show did it better than Community.) Of course, Christmas has been commercialized way out of proportion; it’s the most stressful time of the year when everyone, regardless of their annual income, feels compelled to overspend to show everyone in their life that they are loved. But sitcoms, from the traditional (“Happy Days”) to the newfangled (“The Office”), have traditionally sidestepped this cynicism to warm our cold, anxious hearts, if only for half an hour.

One sitcom that combined traditional and modern styles was The Big Bang Theory. Over the course of 12 seasons, Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Howard, Raj, and the rest of the crew courted viewers who were used to this form, and those who were just not used to it. Perhaps his most traditional flourish was his commitment to holiday episodes. Creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Predy produced six Christmas episodes for the series, all of which are well-loved by fans of the show. (At least they aren’t anywhere near The five worst episodes of The Big Bang Theory..) But one Christmas episode is not only considered the best of the six (according to the Internet Movie Database), but also ranks as one of the most popular characters in the series.

It’s the one that’s supposed to be about Leonard’s excitement at being able to help a famous scientist when he finds out that Penny is dating the man. But what makes this episode sing is its weird B-plot, in which Sheldon tries to find a gift for Penny that matches the value of what she gave him.

Sheldon, after receiving barely-helpful advice from Howard and Raj, buys a wide range of bathroom items with the intention of selling them off to match the cost of Penny’s gift. When Penny’s gift turns out to be a used and autographed napkin by Leonard Nimoy, a shocked Sheldon gives Penny all of her bath items and hugs her.

Is The Bathroom Gift Hypothesis Really That Popular With Big Bang Theory Fans? It is currently ranked number two according to IMDb “Stockholm Syndrome” series finale.
