The chain was founded in 1981 by Joseph Crugnale, Italian immigrant. Until 1989, the United States ranked one of America’s top 10 pizza restaurants today. The expansion followed soon, and at the end of the 2000s it had about 100 locations.

The chain of the restaurant hopes that the bankruptcy will provide “breathing charm”, so it can “determine the best way forward and shape a general reorganization program”.
