Bengaluru woman jumps from moving auto as driver takes wrong route; Namma Yatri reacts

A 30-year-old woman jumped off a moving auto-rickshaw in East Bengaluru on Thursday night after she noticed the driver deviating from his marked route and heading towards an unknown destination, ignoring her directions.

The incident took place while en route from Horamavu to Thanisandra and was later shared on social media by the woman’s husband, Azhar Khan.Though no formal police complaint was filed, Khan brought it to the attention of the Bengaluru city police through a post on X (formerly Twitter). , that the auto-rickshaw driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

The woman had booked the ride through the Namma Yatri app, but got worried when the driver deviated from the regular route and headed towards Hebbal. Despite her repeated requests, the driver remained unresponsive. According to Khan, the driver showed signs of intoxication such as red eyes and erratic behavior.

“When the vehicle reached Nagawara, the driver suddenly swerved onto the flyover, which was not part of the intended route,” Khan said. The Times of India.

Sensing the possible danger, the woman resorted to decisive actions. As the autorickshaw was slowing down near the runway’s under-ramp, he jumped out of the moving vehicle.Luckily, he escaped unharmed.

After getting out, the driver approached her trying to convince her to get back into the auto-rickshaw, but she flatly refused. Instead, she completed the online fare payment and arranged for another vehicle to continue her journey home safely.

“This raises serious concerns about women’s safety. If this can happen to my wife at 9pm, think how many other women can face such dangers while traveling late,” Khan told The Times of India. to

The incident sparked discussions on social media and caught the attention of Namma Yatri. In a message to Khan, the travel booking platform responded: “Thanks for taking the time to call Azhar. Please DM us for further assistance.”

The woman was initially reluctant to file a formal complaint fearing reprisals, but after Khan’s social media post gained traction, the Bengaluru police approached her.
