Belgrade school shooting: The parents of the teenage attacker were arrested
The boy, who was detained in a psychiatric institution after the attack, cannot be tried because he is under the age of criminal responsibility.
But his parents were charged with “a serious act against public safety” for failing to properly provide weapons and ammunition. They denied the charges.
Their trial was held behind closed doors.
Vladimir was found guilty of endangering public safety by teaching his son to shoot and failing to protect his gun at a high court in Belgrade on Monday. He was also found guilty of child neglect.
Although Miljana was found guilty of child neglect, she was acquitted of illegal possession of weapons and ammunition.
The boy, known only as KK, was brought to court by a special escort after leaving the psychiatric hospital for the first time since the attack on the Vladislav Rybnikar elementary school in October.
As a witness, he was questioned by the judge, the prosecutor, the defense, and the lawyers of the families of the dead and injured. He also answered the questions of the mother of the murdered child.
The parents of the murdered children attended the hearing, hoping to clarify the motive behind the boy’s mass shooting.
A lawyer representing the families described it as “one of the most difficult ordeals I have ever witnessed in my career”.
Eight of the 9 children killed by KK were girls.
Serbia was further saddened in less than 48 hours when eight more people were gunned down by a 21-year-old in a village on the outskirts of the capital.
After his parents’ court testimony, the family’s attorney told reporters that the boy had led a normal life before the shooting and that no trial would be able to determine what led to his attack.
